Bike Sharing comes to Los Angeles

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kicked off CicLAvia this past weekend by announcing a new bike-sharing program, that aims to bring 4,000 rentable bikes to Los Angeles, stationed at 400 kiosks from Downtown to the Westside. This $16million dollar investment from Bike Nation is good news for the city seeing that it was not feasible for the City to sustain the program themselves.

Bike Nation already has this share system up-and-running in many U.S. cities, including Washington D.C. and San Francisco. According to the company, the kiosks are solar-powered and simple.

Bike Nation will have kiosks built over the next 18 to 24 months in areas around Downtown, Hollywood, Playa del Rey, Westwood and Venice Beach.

This is great news for the City of Los Angeles who recently approved a city-wide RFP for a carsharing program.

Metro Delays Expo Farmdale Station Opening

While the Expo Line is opening on April 28 between 7th/Metro Center in downtown Los Angeles and the La Cienega/Jefferson station, one station in between won’t be making its debut quite yet: the Farmdale station adjacent to Dorsey High School. Many feel the delay should not be tolerated seeing that the line has been under construction since 2006. What do you think of the delay of this particular stations opening?

San Francisco Announces Sharing Economy Working Group

Mayor Edwin M. Lee of San Francisco, announced the formation of a Sharing Economy Working Group today, the first of its kind in the U.S. and perhaps in the world. The purpose of the working group, “is to take a comprehensive look at the economic benefits, innovative companies and emerging policy issues around the growing ’sharing economy’”.

“The growing ‘sharing economy’ is leveraging technology and innovation to generate new jobs and income for San Franciscans in every neighborhood and at every income level,” said Mayor Lee.

San Francisco is home to Airbnb, TaskRabbit and MeshLabs to name a few, the Silicon Valley is definitely at the forefront of the collaborative consumption movement.

LAXCarShare Member, Taylor Segrest, was Writer/Co-Producer on this documentary. It just won Best Documentary at the Austin Film Festival.

Darwin is a documentary film about an isolated community at the end of a weathered road in Death Valley, California. Propelled from society by tragic turns, the people of Darwin (population 35) must now find ways to coexist in a place without a government, a church, jobs, or children. The near-ghost town’s survival depends on a fragile, gravity-fed waterline that descends from the mountains where top secret weapons are being tested. One “accidental” drop of a bomb, they half-joke, could wipe out their entire town.

In Memory of Niko Laurie…

On July 17, 2011, a horrible accident occured, causing Niko, grave harm. The staff at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, worked on Niko to save him. In the early morning of July 18, 2011, Niko passed as a result of his injuries, he was only 4 years old.

In his memory, the Niko Laurie Foundation has been created to educate others on building communities to support safe and healthy environments for toddlers. To get more information and support the Niko Laurie Foundation, please click here.
